We are working to restore healthy food access so that people across Chicago neighborhoods can have a worthwhile grocery experience regardless of zip code.

Forty Acres Fresh Market is preparing to open its first brick and mortar store in Chicago's Austin neighborhood in 2025 and is currently building the store opening team.

We are looking for a dedicated and dependable full-time Grocery & Front End Clerk to join our team. This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule that includes early morning shifts, as needed. The ideal candidate will possess excellent customer service skills, keen attention to detail, and the ability to handle various tasks in a bustling, fast-paced environment.

The Job:
The Grocery & Front End Clerk at Forty Acres Fresh Market reports directly to the 2nd Assistant Store Manager and plays a critical role in ensuring a seamless shopping experience for our customers. This full-time position requires a blend of top notch customer service skills and operational excellence. Duties include handling cash register transactions, bagging groceries, building merchandising displays, keeping store shelves stocked and clean, thoroughly responding to customer questions and concerns, and maintaining a safe and cleanly store environment. This onsite position is an exciting opportunity within the grocery industry to create a best in class shopping experience for customers. Duties include but are not limited to:​

Follow the leadership and direction of the 2nd Assistant Store Manager and Front End Supervisor to perform assigned tasks according to Standard Operating Procedures and training.

Check out customers using POS systems, under supervision of Front End Management, according to Standard Operating Procedures. Includes cash handling and processing various payment types.

Ensure that the center store and front end is fully stocked, check product shelf life and ensure inventory is rotated properly, and the product is faced throughout the department.

Build displays that are seasonally relevant, utilize cross merchandising, and are focused on trending products.

Create an environment that makes customers feel welcome, important, and appreciated by answering questions about products sold within the department and throughout the store.

Assist customers in finding and locating desired products by knowing the store's layout, and conduct price checks as requested by store leadership or customers.

Assist in making sure all returned, discarded, or product left in the wrong area are returned to the proper location within the store.

Gather and return shopping carts to designated areas.

Clean spills and collect and pick up trash inside the store and in the parking lot.

Clean all areas inside and outside of the store, including trash removal.

Identify unsafe conditions, accidents, or issues and notify store management.

Ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines and company safety policies. Forty Acres is committed to maintaing a safe work environment.

Adhere to all food safety regulations and guidelines.

Practice preventive maintenance by properly inspecting equipment and notifying the appropriate department or store manager of any items in need of repair.

Adhere to all local, state, and federal laws, and company guidelines.

Act with honesty and integrity regarding customer and business information.

Requirements
-
Must be at least 21 years of age
-
Minimum, 1 year relevant retail experience that includes cashiering and operating computerized cash register systems
-
Flexible availability: able to work early morning shifts (5:00-6:00 AM) as needed, days, nights, weekends, and holidays
-
Must be capable of providing and modeling exceptional customer service
-
Knowledge of basic math, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in order to learn POS and scale systems.

Strong communication skills (written and verbal) including active listening and the ability to thoroughly follow written and verbal instructions

Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy

Preferred Qualifications

At least 1 year of relevant grocery retail experience​

Experience stocking shelves and building displays is a plus
-
Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus

Must be detail oriented, self-motivated, and able to work independently or in groups.​​

Work Environment/ Physical Demands
-
Must have the physical ability to stand for extended periods of time, bend, climb, balance, stoop to grasp objects, kneel, crouch, crawl, frequently push/pull up to 75 lbs., frequently lift and/or move loads up to 50 lbs.

Ability to enter the coolers and freezers thereby being subjected to and withstanding frequent temperature changes for extended periods of time.

Occasional high stress when dealing with systems/customers/staff.

Able to work a flexible schedule with various shifts, including weekends and holidays, as determined by the store/business needs and as required to ensure adequate store staffing, and ability to be reached as needed after hours.

Must have a reliable source of transportation, as this role requires timeliness for store opening shifts.
